your taskbar and system tray with Taskbar Shuffle

Windows only: In addition to reordering your Windows taskbar items, previously
mentioned Taskbar Shuffle can now reorder your system tray icons as well. As
much as I liked previous versions of Taskbar Shuffle, its footprint always
seemed a little too big to gain startup privileges. After taking a look at the
latest, though—which includes taskbar reordering, system tray reordering (by
holding Ctrl while dragging), and middle-click window button closing—Taskbar
Shuffle has more than proved itself worth the 6MB memory footprint its uses. If
you’re obsessive about organizing your taskbar, the free, Windows-only Taskbar
Shuffle is a must-have.

Create
a custom logon message in Vista

Windows Vista users: Make a custom message display prior to logging
into your PC. While IT departments often use this technique to show legal
warnings and network policies, you can customize it to say whatever you want.
Windows Fanatics explains the simple process.

1. Click Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools and Local
Security Policy.
2. Expand Local Policies then Security options.
3. In the
details pane double click Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting
to log on.
4. Type in the message you want to appear.

Introduction

Vista provides developers with the new DWM based aero
interface. A new set of thumbnail API’s can be used to access some of this new
technology. This virtual desktop program takes advantage of this new API and
uses some tricks of its own to provide a powerful virtual desktop manager with a
full screen thumbnail based preview. You can have as many desktops as you want
and can seamlessly switch between them.

But wait! What if you still are
using XP? Don’t worry, Vista/XP Virtual Desktops provides support for XP as
well, although window previews are not live since XP doesn’t have
DWM.

Windows Key + Z – Show the fullscreen “switcher”
Windows Key + W – Pop up the window menu for the active window
Windows Key + Numpad 1…9 – Switch to the corresponding desktop, if
it exists

Windows Key + Control + Numpad 1…9 – Send the foreground window to
the corresponding desktop

TweakVista.com – Adjust taskbar preview size

Here is the best Vista tweak I have found. This will fix the thumb image for your desktop. You need super human vision no more.

Visit Ave’s Vista Apps and download a free copy of Thumbnail Sizer.
Once you have the software extracted, run AveThumbnailSizer.exe to get started.
Move the sliders to adjust the preview window size.

The changes are instant. Move your mouse over a minimized window to see the results of your change.
Check the box if you want to turn on fade-in animation and adjust the slider.
Once
you are happy with your changes, click the Start AveVistaThumbnailSizer
with Windows if you want the utility to automatically start every time
you turn on your computer.
Close the Thumbnail Sizer when you are finished.

Now your taskbar previews can be so large that you can easily read text on them!
